Rain or shine we will be kicking off the holidays right with some funky beats and spicy drinks. The Hive – art gallery

If you’re ever in the downtown LA area and consider yourself an art lover stop by the Hive Gallery on Spring st. It’s a part of a thriving art community and virtual think tank that has regular events, fundraisers and art programs worth checking out. Last weekend I stopped by a Saturday night event to catch the latest art exhibit. The spot was packed with friendly faces, live entertainment and of course tons of artwork. I also ran into Santa Barbara local artists Jimmy Bell and David Cooley who have become part of the art scene in downtown. Jimmy Bell is currently featured at the Hive and once decorated the walls of the Cali Green store.

LIVING PEACE SERIES

This past weekend I was lucky to witness the first of a series of guest speakers hosted by the Center For Living Peace at UC Irvine. The guest of honor was Academy Award winner Charlize Theron who shared her experiences helping South Africa in front of a sold out crowd and online audience. The Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Program (CTAOP) is an organization committed to helping South Africans live safer and healthier lives with a particular focus on HIV/AIDS. Currently many of the children in South Africa face a 50% chance of contracting HIV throughout their lifetime. The CTAOP creates mobile health clinics that provide a very necessary sex education to thousands of students and community members, giving them the tools to make smarter decisions that may save their lives.

There’s a certain vibe in the air when everyone under the same roof has the intentions of helping others. It seems attending this event sparked the global citizen in me and I figured the least I could do would be to share the involved organizations with our readers. Perhaps this story will inspire one of you to get involved and/or follow through with a selfless act of good.

So, you can find out more about the Living Peace Series here, which is organized by the Center For Living Peace. The next scheduled speakers will be Sir Richard Branson and His Holiness, the XIV Dalai Lama (don’t miss these).

Smokeout Booth in the works

Back to the drawing boards! This is the fun part about running a clothing company, getting to design things like our vendor booth for the up and coming Smokeout Festival (10/16). We’ll be spending this next week getting things primed for the event. We got two new shirt designs, hats, beanies, buttons, stickers, free music and more… If you haven’t already consider grabbing your tix and meeting us out there. I hear last year pulled around 30,000 people and this year is packed w/ killer performers across 3 stages. Incubus, Manu Chao, Cypress Hill, Slightly Stoopid, Deadmau5, MGMT, Atmosphere, and this list goes on…

Foot Races

They’re not just for runners anymore! And guess what? Even YOU can participate. California is home to many fun races around the year and it is guaranteed that there is one near you, maybe even this weekend (See you at the Malibu Dirt Dash!). Although training is required for many of the longer distance courses and some of the faster 5k races, there are several shorter runs that new runners can participate in. Mud runs, scavenger hunts, adventure races (ever seen the Amazing Race?), and team relay races are increasing in number and frequency due to their popularity with non-athletes and trained athletes alike.

As you can tell in the picture above, foot races don’t have to be long and flat (or necessarily sober). There is always an enthusiastic crowd and a festival atmosphere. Most races have live bands, vendors, and a beer garden. The best part is that a lot of the races raise money for good causes so, don’t be shy, grab a friend, and sign up for a race this year!

Pacific Festival x Cali Green

Mark your calendars for the first annual Pacific Fest Launch Party, September 4th and 5th! This premiere two day event will be showcasing over 30 of indie music’s top performers across 5 stages, both an inside and outside experience, hand selected food vendors (best bang for your buck!), VIP options and more…!!! This is just the beginning, the launch party is actually a prequel taste test of what’s to come at the 2011 Pacific Festival OC.

So why is Cali Green promoting this event? First off, we know it’s going to be a sick and want to share the experience with YOU! Second, Pacific Fest has roots in SB, as do we… some of those involved are Santa Barbara locals and dear friends so naturally we support them in any way we can. Third, it’s all about the music! Sneak peak into the lineup…

Day 1 (DJ / Electronic Vibe): Steve Aoki, the Sounds, Miami Horror, and more…
Day 2 (Reggae Vibe): Rebelution, the Expendables, the Aggrolites, and more…

Make if Funky

Here are some photos from the “Make it Funky – arts & music festival”. It was the second year for this China Town event largely put on by the Flock Shop, an independent boutique who supports the arts and handmade goods (clothing / accessories / etc). The whole scene was bursting with creativity from the vendors to the live arts to the live music. We had the please of meeting Nathan from the Hive Gallery who does amazing sculptures and paintings (*see the second picture below), copped a CD from the funky hip-hop crew Simple Citizens and our booth neighbor, Janie XY hooked up some hand made stuffed animals. Sinuous & the Blue Steps

If anyone remembers the Cali Green 1year event back in November then you’ll surely remember Sinuous, P-able & the Blue Steps. How can I best describe the sound? It’s Hip Hop blended with funky blues beats performed with live keys, guitar, bass, drums and a sax (or other wind instruments). This Friday, May 28th catch them again at Velvet Jones and be sure to get there early so you don’t miss any of the performers.. here’s the lineup.
